New Center to Coordinate Work to Eliminate Prison Rape


Eight years after the passage of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Council on Crime and Delinquency have created a resource center to help create national standards for facilities.

In 2008, more than 200,000 adult inmates suffered sexual assault, and the average rate of similar assault in juvenile facilities was 12 percent, according to the BJS.The National Resource Center for the Elimination of Prison Rape will coordinate training and research on the topic.
