With Plate Gadget, CA Probation Agency Helps Find Stolen Cars

The probation department in Sacramento County, Calif., has added an automated license plate recognition system and cameras to two of its official vehicles, and in six weeks the agency has helped recover six stolen vehicles, reports the county’s Bee. The system, which has become increasingly popular with law enforcement agencies, automatically scans license plates of parked and passing vehicles and matches them to a statewide database of vehicles that were reported stolen.

Bob Pinzler, a founder of PlateScan, based in Newport Beach and one of the few California companies that sells the technology to law enforcement agencies, said “it’s quite possible” that the Sacramento County Probation Department is the only probation department in the state outfitted with the system. Several Sacramento agencies, including the Police and Sheriff’s departments, have patrol cars equipped with the technology.
