The Department of Justice has awarded $6.3 million in grants to six jurisdictions and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators in connection with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. The District of Columbia, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas and Oregon will receive up to $100,000 each. The motor vehicle association will receive $5.7 million to support the continued implementation of the system.
The title information system, available to both the public and law enforcers, is an electronic system used to verify vehicle information in five key areas: current state of title, brand history, odometer reading, total loss history, and salvage history. The title system, available at www.vehiclehistory.gov, does not include vehicle repair histories, recall information, and other care and maintenance data.
