Debtors Prison?


Fifteen states examined in a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice, have jurisdictions that arrest people for failing to pay debt or appear at debt-related hearings. Researchers also found that many states profiled in “Criminal Justice Debt: A Barrier to Reentry,” charge a broad array of fees, which are often imposed without taking into account ability to pay.
