Overdose Rise Signals Heroin Increase In Memphis, Suburbs

Overdoses tipped investigators off to an uptick in heroin use in Memphis and suburbs, reports the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Seven people face felony charges as a result of a nine-month undercover operation that targeted heroin trafficking.

David McGriff of the West Tennessee Drug Task Force said he was shocked to find users as young as 16. “Society and people in society tend to want to experiment with drugs,” he said. “We’ll see drugs begin to fade out, and then come back. And I think that’s what we’re seeing right now. We were seizing ounce quantities … and that is a tremendous, significant amount of heroin for law enforcement to take into custody.”
