Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in Detroit says her office is in dire straits, reports the Detroit Free Press. Worthy says her staff handles more cases than any other office of similar size in the country. The staff count has dropped from 190 attorneys down to 150 and soon will be 130, she said, far smaller than the 275- to 375-member staffs in offices of comparable jurisdictions nationwide.
“It’s not like ‘Law and Order’ and ‘CSI,’ ” she said. “On TV, there are all these people working on one case.” In Wayne County, prosecutors practice a simple philosophy: “Walk slowly, read quickly. You may get a file in the morning you’ve never seen before. Walk to the courtroom as slow as you can, read the file as quickly as you can and then you go in and try the case. And that’s not how it should be.”
