States Cutting Correction Costs


2009-07-27_pew-report_state-budgets-v2At least 22 states are targeting corrections budgets for cuts in fiscal year 2010 -the first time in many decades that these politically sensitive areas have faced serious re-examination found a new report, “The Fiscal Crisis in Corrections: Rethinking Policies and Practices” by the Vera Institute of Justice Center on Sentencing and Corrections.

The study highlights some of the more innovative cost-cutting ideas, such as: increasing the use of positive awards system for parolees; geriatric or medical parole; and risk reduction sentences.
