Sotomayor “Consensus Judge” On Crime: Leahy

With Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing starting next week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is pushing her criminal justice credentials, bringing law enforcement officials to Washington to publicly back the nomination, reports “It can be said with confidence that Judge Sotomayor is unquestionably a consensus judge on criminal justice issues,” Leahy said yesterday.

Leahy was flanked by representatives of nine law enforcement groups who have endorsed the Sotomayor nomination, including the National Association of Police Organizations and the National Fraternal Order of Police. Republican senators have begun to escalate attacks on Sotomayor, focusing on her ruling in the Ricci case, overturned last month by the Supreme Court, where she ruled against white firefighters who had sued the city of New Haven, Ct., over a promotion exam.
