AZ May Replace Capitol Custodians With Inmates

Officials have a new plan for cleaning up the mess at the Arizona State Capitol: Make prisoners do it. In a cost-cutting move, reports the Arizona Republic, the state is considering using inmates for custodial services at the Statehouse. “Every other option has been explored, and this is literally an absolutely last resort,” said Alan Ecker of the Department of Administration.

Sen. Rebecca Rios said she worried about sharing the building with jailbirds turned janitors. The administration department is laying off 20 custodians. The department slashed 138 jobs last month in the wake of a $1.6 billion budget adjustment earlier this year.
