The initiative, begun in 1992, promotes reform of juvenile detention to reduce reliance on secure confinement, improve public safety, reduce racial disparities and bias, and save tax dollars. The foundation says it has “repeatedly demonstrated that jurisdictions can safely reduce reliance on secure detention.” There are about 100 JDAI sites in 22 states and Washington, D.C.
