In 2003, the service and benefit functions of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service were transferred to the USCIS, under the Department of Homeland Security. It has 15,000 employees and contractors working in approximately 250 locations around the world. It is responsible for administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions.
