Founded in 1871, the NRA began political activism by creating its Legislative Affairs Division in 1934, when Congress passed the National Firearms Act, America's first attempt at federal gun control. Over the past 40 years, the NRA has been a powerful political force in America, serving as guardian of the Second Amendment, bulwark against federal oversight of firearms and a lightning rod for those who favor gun control. The group claims 4.3 million members, about half of whom are said to be hunters. The NRA has developed into a single-issue juggernaut that is unlike any other.
