Ever wonder what it’s like to be in a police car during a high-speed chase. Indianapolis Star reporter Vic Ryckaert and photographer Charlie Nye had that opportunity yesterday with officer Scott Chandler. Chandler joined the pursuit of three armed bank robbery suspects. Chandler hit speeds of more than 70 mph as the suspects’ car weaved through traffic and ran red lights. Later, Chandler called this a slow chase and noted that other fleeing suspects have hit speeds of 100 mph or more on long, straight roads. “I spent most of the five-minute pursuit with a white-knuckled grip on the door handle,” Ryckaert says.
The suspects’ car eventually ran a red light and was hit by another vehicle. Two suspects surrrendered and a third shot himself. Says Ryckaert: “I shook the chill from my fingers and pulled a reporter’s notebook from my coat pocket. The incident was over. I began jotting the first notes since the chase began.”
