Houston Arrests 100 Looting Suspects After Hurricane Ike

Houston police have arrested almost 100 people suspected of looting since Hurricane Ike barreled through the area last weekend, says the Houston Chronicle. Sixty-one were taken into custody from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday and another 33 during the subsequent 24-hours.

Police Chief Harold Hurtt reported that the first night of a weeklong citywide curfew resulted in 108 citations and 32 arrests. One group of individuals pulled over during curfew turned out to be driving a stolen vehicle, and had items reported stolen from a house or store in the car, Hurtt said. Burglaries are 11.7 percent lower than the same time period in 2007, Hurtt said. “Houston’s a safe city,” said Mayor Bill White.
