Miami’s Civilian Investigative Panel said Police Chief John Timoney violated several internal police department rules in his much-publicized decision to accept the use of a free Lexus SUV from a dealer, reports the Miami Herald. The violated rules: a ban on accepting gifts, department guidelines on how to deal with the news media, and a requirement for officers to be truthful.
The panel’s vote follows rulings by state and county ethics boards — both of which fined Timoney $500 for accepting the SUV and not disclosing it on gift forms. Miami’s voter-created civilian panel has no power to punish the chief, but its vote could prompt more discipline from City Manager Pete Hernandez, who docked him a week’s pay in January.
