Sentence Lengths Vary Widely In Federal Drug Cases

Sentence lengths for defendants in DEA case varied widely across the nation last year reports the Transactional Records Access Clearimghouse (TRAC). The median sentence for the 111 individuals convicted in DEA investigations based in East St. Louis, IL., was 146 months. Close to the opposite extreme were the 188 defendants in Buffalo, where the typical sentence was only 27 months.

Even when the comparison of the median DEA-case sentences focused on those in “big city” districts, the variations were striking. In Ft. Worth-Dallas) the typical 2007 sentence for the 202 defendants was 108 months. For the 238 such defendants in Los Angeles, it was 60 months. For the 133 DEA

defendants in Philadelphia, it was only 48 months.
