The Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star has taken the unusual step of responding publicly concerns of our readers about reporting on something that has not been published. A reported submitted a request under the state Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request to the clerks in three counties asking for the names and towns of residence of all gun permit holders. Editor Ken Tingley writes that “this immediately drew great concern from members of gun clubs and people with gun permits in general, a concern we totally understand.”
Tingley assures readers that the paper would not endanger private citizens or make information conveniently available that might lead to a safety concern. He said the newspaper may compare a database of convicted felons with a gun permit database in each county to find out if there are people who shouldn't have guns. “We can't do that story without the gun permit database,” Tingley said.
