President Bush, the American Bar Association Journal, and former Attorney General John Ashcroft are among winners of the 2007 awards bestowed by writers of the White Collar Crime Prof Blog, law professors Peter Henning of Wayne State University and Ellen Podgor of Stetson University. Bush got the nod for “best exposure of the deficiencies in the federal sentencing guidelines” for finding I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby’s guidelines sentence to be excessive.
The ABA Journal was honored for selecting former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as “Lawyer of the Year” by saying “he made the most news, even if almost all of it was bad.” Ashcroft was credited by having a former subordinate, New Jersey U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie, for appointing him monitor under a deferred prosecution agreement that will require the monitored company to pay him between $29,000,000 and $52,000,000.
