Ex-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has hired former Deputy Attorney General George Terwilliger to represent him in investigations of mismanagement of the Justice Department, reports the Associated Press. (The hiring was first reported by Newsweek). Terwilliger had been on the White House’s short list to replace Gonzales. nvestigators are looking into allegations that Gonzales lied to Congress and illegally allowed politics to influence hiring and firing.
Terwilliger said Gonzales did nothing wrong or illegal, and that hiring an attorney should not signal any guilt. The Senate Judiciary Committee starts hearings next week on the nomination of Michael Mukasey to succeed Gonzales. The department’s inspector general and Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating Gonzales and other former officials.
