Possible Abduction Of Kansas Teen Gets National Media Play

In the latest case of a possible abduction of a young woman to get national media attention, police in Overland Park, Ks., near Kansas City, are searching for clues in the disappearance of Kelsey Smith, 18, from a Target store parking lot last Saturday night. Police released videotape of a truck they believe may be connected to the case, the Kansas City Star reports. A man who may be the truck’s driver was described as a “person of interest.”

Based on a videotape of the man that has been shown on television, “a lot of calls are coming in from across the country from people who say they recognize this person,” Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said. More than 50 detectives from local police agencies and the FBI are following up on more than 300 leads. Smith's father, Greg Smith, has been in law enforcement for 16 years and said he knew it was important to keep his daughter's name and face in the public. “People watch these kinds of things on the news. Two days later the story's done. People forget,” Greg Smith said. “I want to do what I can to keep my daughter out in front of people so they know she's still out there.”
