Charlie Hess, 80, a former FBI and CIA agent, has worked for the past five years as a volunteer in the El Paso County Sheriff's Office's cold-case unit in Colorado Springs, says the New York Times. After organizing files no one had looked at, in some cases, for decades, he began poring over one case in particular. He did hundreds of interviews and made dozens of trips by car for meetings at the penitentiary an hour south.
The Times Magazine tells the story of how Hess interrogated Robert Charles Browne, a possible serial killer who has “confessed” to nearly 50 murders.
