With Houston police facing complaints about Tasers being deployed disproportionately on blacks, Mayor Bill White said Wednesday that he wants an independent analysis of how the department has used the devices. White said the department should “promptly” select an outside group to study the matter, two weeks after a Taser incident involving a professional football player.
The study would examine data accumulated in the two years since the Tasers entered departmentwide use as a means of reducing injuries to officers and deadly force against suspects, he said. He said the study could assure the community that the devices aren’t being used “based on stereotypes.”
