FBI Investigates Mass Market Painter Kinkade in Investment Scheme

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation are looking into claims that Thomas Kinkade, the painter whose landscape scenes have flooded the mass art market, was involved in a scheme to defraud investors, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Investigators are focusing on issues raised in civil litigation by at least six former owners of Thomas Kinkade Signature Gallerys, shops that specialize in the mass-produced works of the self-styled “Painter of Light.” The ex-owners claim Kinkade used his Christian faith to persuade them to invest in the independently owned stores, which sell only Kinkade’s work. Kinkade has denied the allegations in the civil litigation.
