The Chicago Tribune reports that the case of a California bipolar woman, Christina Eilman, who was seriously injured in a fall after she was arrested and then released by Chicago police in May has raised questions about how officers responded — and whether a different course of police action might have kept her safe.
Eilman was arrested after a disturbance at an airport and was later released by police despite erratic behavior, protestations that she was ill and repeated emergency phone calls from her mother in California. A short time later, she was injured when she plunged from a seventh floor window in one of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods. She remains on life support and her parents have filed suit against the city.
