“Chic”, Deadly Heroin-Fentanyl Mix Reaches Oklahoma

The deadly mix of heroin cut with the powerful painkiller fentanyl is on the streets of Oklahoma — ready to snort, smoke, shoot, or swallow, The Oklahoman reports. “The more people that die from a particular brand of heroin, the more popular it becomes,” said Mark Woodward of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control. “A heroin addict is chasing the dragon. They want their first high. They want it to feel like the first time. If it killed 100 people in Detroit and Chicago, maybe it’s strong enough to get that high back.”

This year, the drug combo has been responsible for between 150 and 300 deaths in a handful of cities. Oklahoma officials aren’t sure if the mixture has resulted in an overdose death in the state, but they have seen a steady rise in drug-related deaths since the 1990s. Woodward said the heroin that arrives in Oklahoma is between 8 percent and 20 percent pure. He said 25 percent pure heroin can be lethal, but more often it’s the filler that causes the death, not the heroin. “In the ’70s and ’80s, people considered heroin users as homeless people in the alley with a needle in their arm,” Woodward said. “Now, it’s a chic drug, partly because it can be snorted or taken in a capsule. They don’t market it as heroin. Now, it’s ‘chiva’ or ‘cheese.’ It’s more glamorous and more acceptable.”
