Elderly Have Highest Suicide Rates

An 85-year-old Corona, Calif., grandmother found dead of multiple stab wounds earlier this month an apparent suicide, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Persons older than 65 have the highest suicide rates in the United States, according to the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Statistics show the suicide rate among adults 65 to 69 is 13.1 per 100,000, while the rate for those ages 85 and older is 21 per 100,000. Reasons frequently include any type of major loss, be it from physical health, finances or losing a loved one. Another common issue can be that they do not want to be a burden on others.
