Maine has joined 33 other states as participants in the National Sex Offender Public Registry, reports the Associated Press. Developed by the U.S. Justice Department, the program links sex offender data from across the nation by creating a link to each participating state’s Web site.
A national Web site – www.nsopr.gov – allows Internet users to search by name, state, county, city or ZIP code, officials said. The national registry is also linked through the Maine Department of Public Safety’s sex offender Web site: www.maine.gov/sor. The Maine registry was begun in 1992 and went online in December 2003. There are 1,939 Maine sex offenders on the list.
