“Killer Groupies” Propose To Death Row Prisoners

Convicted murderer Scott Peterson was on California’s death row barely an hour when the first proposal arrived from a woman who wants to be the new Mrs. Scott Peterson, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Three dozen phone calls came to the warden’s office on Peterson’s first day at San Quentin State Prison. Women pleaded for his mailing address, and one smitten 18-year-old said she wanted to marry him.

Several experts on the world of the condemned say that even though the women don’t know him, there is an allure to marrying a notorious man. “They love the celebrity status,” said criminologist Jack Levin of Boston’s Northeastern University, who called them “killer groupies.” “A lot of women are really taken with the man’s criminal case, and they overwhelmingly believe these men are innocent,” said historian Rick Halperin of Southern Methodist University, president of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. Letters of adoration flow in daily to California death row inmates from all over the world, some 20 handwritten pages long.
