Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell will choose a in-house candidate to replace Police Chief Edward Lohn, who announced his retirement this week, says the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She dropped the names of two candidates: Deputy Chief Timothy Hennessy and 6th District Commander Lester Fultz. A spokesman said 4th District Commander Michael McGrath is another candidate.
The change comes 16 months after Campbell asked a former federal prosecutor and a retired FBI agent to investigate overtime abuses detailed last year in the Plain Dealer. Their report Tuesday criticized Lohn for tolerating what Campbell called “a culture of entitlement” that led to excessive overtime. The report also accused him of misleading investigators. The mayor called for a special prosecutor to determine whether criminal charges should be filed against Cleveland officers accused of abusing overtime.
