Phoenix’ Harris Favored As New Police Chief

Phoenix could have a new police chief as early as today, says the Arizona Republic. Interim Chief Jack Harris, a council and union favorite, appears to have an inside track on the job. Harris is competing against two other internal candidates, Assistant Chiefs Silverio Ontiveros and John Buchanan; retired Phoenix Assistant Chief David Brewster; former Chief Terrell Bolton of Dallas; and Assistant Chief Louis Vega of Miami. Harris, who has been serving as acting chief since Harold Hurtt took the Houston top cop job in March, has the support of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association and was all but endorsed by Mayor Phil Gordon earlier this year.

In his May State of the City speech, Gordon said Harris would “lead the department to a new, even higher level,” adding that he “thinks big.” The hiring decision will be made by City Manager Frank Fairbanks.
