Florida’s new Juvenile Justice secretary, Anthony Schembri, fired four employees Thursday, including a 20-year veteran, for physically abusing or neglecting kids, says the Miami Herald. A fifth was suspended.

The workers included a dentention center supervisor who failed to seek medical attention for a detainee who became sick after deliberately taking another juvenile’s medication; another worker who, when faced with a juvenile who expressed a desire to commit suicide, failed to notify supervisors and remove items that the detainee might use to hurt himself; the teen did attempt suicide; a supervisor who struck a detainee twice on the back of the head, then choked the juvenile; and a house parent at a school for boys who used an “improper head-lock restraint” on a boy and did not record the incident in a logbook. The department’s leadership was overhauled after last year’s death of Omar Paisley, 17, who died of a burst appendix that was untreated for three days at the Miami juvenile lockup.
