Shooting Prompts Chief To Criticize Chicago Judge

When a Chicago judge slashed bail for reputed gang boss Kenyatta White in February after he was charged with shooting a man while out on bond on a murder charge, police and prosecutors warned that the court was inviting more violence. The Chicago Tribune says police are searching for White after witnesses identified him in a case this week in which a gang member in an ongoing dispute with White was shot several times.

The new shooting is the latest violence in a gang feud police and prosecutors say was exacerbated when Cook County Circuit Judge Leo Holt reduced White’s bail to the relatively low amount of $100,000, altering another judge’s ruling. Police Superintendent Philip Cline expressed renewed frustration with Holt’s action. “Here we are again arresting somebody we’ve arrested twice before for violent crimes and we could be using those resources elsewhere,” Cline said.
