Airmailed Bowling Ball Misses NYC Officers

A tried to kill three law enforcement officers by dropping a 16-pound bowling ball at them from the terrace of his 17th-floor apartment, says the New York Times. The ball narrowly missed the targets. Douglas Stiff, 69, was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The motive was unclear. A 911 call was placed from Stiff’s apartment Monday night reporting a robbery in progress. Two police officers and a parole officer who were tracking down a parole violator responded to the call. As they walked around the side of the building, a bowling ball hit the ground a few feet away.

The practice of throwing items at police officers from high places is called airmail.
