S.F. Prosecutors Lack Computers; New DA Vows Fix

Kamala Harris, new district attorney in San Francisco, promises to work on securing computers for her assistants, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Harris, 39, must remake “a place that technologically has advanced little since the introduction of the teletype,” says the paper.

Harris’s mother is Indian American and her father African American, making her the first woman of color to serve as a district attorney in California. “I don’t think, ‘I’m the first woman,’ ” Harris said. “I don’t think that way at all. I notice those things only in the moment when I get feedback on them.”

Her first order of business as the new D.A. is to update the technology in the office. Most of the lawyers don’t have computers at their desks. She also is tackling the backlog of homicide cases in the office, 40 to 50 dating back as many as four years. She is creating a child sex crimes unit.
