Three Dallas police officers were shot today after confronting an armed man in an apartment complex. The gunman was reported to be holding several hostages, reports the Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV. As of 9:00 a.m. Central Time, the gunman was reported to be holding a young girl as a hostage and was armed with a shotgun and possibly a police weapon.
A Dallas police spokesman said officers responded to a shooting call shortly before 3 a.m. They were shot while attempting enter an apartment where the shooting was reported to have taken place. Sgt. Gil Cerda said the decision to move in came after police determined that someone could be wounded inside. “They decided to go ahead and knock the door down in the bedroom, and that’s when the officers were shot,” Cerda said.
Four children were rescued from the apartment. The wounded officers were taken to Methodist Medical Center for treatment. All were reported in serious condition. “Right now, the tactical unit is still trying to negotiate with this gentleman,” Cerda said. “Unfortunately we’re not getting a positive response from him right now.”
