Denver Residents Seek Officer’s Ouster For Abuses

Some 800 people on Denver’s northeast side want officer Kurt Gary Peterson him removed from the force, the Denver Post reports. They claim that he harasses and beats people, has stolen drugs from dealers and takes bribes from criminals. Peterson has been in trouble in the past for disregarding police procedure and destroying evidence in 80 drug cases.

Peterson says he works hard, loves the community he patrols and has a bad reputation for mistakes that he’s paid for. The decorated officer says he has put away hundreds of criminals during his 17 years of patrolling northeast Denver.

Peterson was shot in the face by a man during a traffic stop last November. He suffers paralysis on one side of his face and lost 60 percent of the hearing in one ear. He’s no evil cop–just a man who has enemies, he says.

Eight hundred people signed a petition to get Peterson off the force. Another organization called One Nation Enlightened is getting more signatures. They will present the petition in a month to the City Council, Police Chief Gerry Whitman and Safety Manager Al LaCabe.
