The former chief police detective in New Haven, Ct., is on trial for derailing a murder investigation, the Associated Press reports.

Brian Sullivan is accused of hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence in the murder of Philip Cusick, who was shot during a botched drug deal in 1996. Sullivan retired when he was charged in 2000.

Yesterday, a detective testified that he had promising leads on the case, but that Sullivan told him to stop “per order of the chief.”
