Exceptionally pure heroin has been sold on the streets of Providence, R.I., lately, prompting a community alert by both the Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals, reports the Providence Journal.

According to Lt. Thomas A. Verdi, commanding officer of the Providence Police Narotics, Firearms and Organized Crime Division, the heroin most recently confiscated off the street is at an 80-percent to 90-percent purity level.

Though no deaths have been attributed to the potent heroin lately, the likelihood of death by overdose dramatically increases when the purity of heroin in the community is at such a high level, according to a statement from Providence police and the state.
