Student journalists for The Harvard Crimson newspaper have sued Harvard University to gain access to campus police records, according to the Boston Globe.

The suit argues that since Harvard police officers have statewide arrest powers, they should be bound by state open-record laws.

Following years of denied requests for police documents, the students’ suit challenges long-held views at many private universities, which consider themselves exempt from state open-record laws, even when their police are sworn in as special state police officers. The controversy has cropped up for decades at campuses across the country.
