The hanging death in Belle Glade, Florida, of Feraris “Ray” Golden was a suicide, not a lynching, a judge ruled Tuesday at the close of a rare inquest.

“No fantasy or stretching the facts” could create probable cause to believe there was a homicide, Circuit Judge Harold Cohen said.

Golden, a 32-year-old black man whose relatives suspected he was lynched, was jobless, poor and depressed. Distorted and drunk, he took a bedsheet from his home and strung himself up in the back yard of his grandmother’s home, Cohen ruled.
