Harold McCord Jr., 36, was headed toward life in prison without parole on a “three strikes” conviction for kidnapping in Washington State. Unshackled and uncuffed at a courtroom hearing yesterday, he had a fake handgun fashioned from cardboard and toilet paper tucked in his waistband. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that McCord made a run for it. Last night, he was still on the loose.
Sheriff’s deputies are concerned about McCord because he has nothing to lose. His surprisingly realistic cardboard gun caused two guards to put down their weapons. He left the courthouse and carjacked a pickup truck.
