The African scam artists who use e-mail to lure their victims have branched out with letters they’re sending through the mail.
The financial come-ons, known as 4-1-9 scams after a section of the Nigerian penal code, have been turning up in south Florida mailboxes in recent months, according to the Fort Myers News-Press. Most promise huge payoffs in return for an investment by the target of the scam.
E-mails with such offers have been flooding the Internet for years. The U.S. Secret Service estimates Americans lose millions of dollars on the frauds every year.
